New RC Mauser
I just picked up an RC 1939 "243"
Normal mixmaster, but with excellent barrel.
What does the lower case l below the serial number denote? Series number?

I suspect that it is part of the serial number. German
production was from 0 to 9999. Then they would start with A and go to 9999 again, then B and then C. Once through the whole alphabet then they started with a small a then b then c till the year ended. The new year they would start all over again.

I'm afraid that you got some very bad info somewhere!
It is a rarity to see a capitol letter on the ser nr of any WW 2 German firearm!
Some makers put the letter after the numbers and some put it below, most were after. In a very few cases the letter was before the number, but that is a rarity.
Once thru the alphabet they started using double letters such as 1300bb. Very few of the firearms makers got into the double letters.

Yup, no capital letters in German
production rifles. I have seen upper case suffixes in post war Czech
stuff but not German.
