Its the exact same design, so you need to follow the exact same rules.

As long as you keep the bullet weight to about 150 grains. You should be OK.

It's not just the bullet weight that matters, it is the burn profile of the powder.
You need to use M2 ball spec 30-06, only.

As limpetmine said, the burn rate of the powder is key to proper timing. When you get a modern, faster-burning powder in a semi designed for a slower burn rate, movement of the parts gets out of time. That's when you end up with bent Op Rods. There is modern ammo made to this spec and the designation is ".30-06 Springfield."
Some have had success with adjustable gas plugs. The technique with these is to open up the plug fully so the action won't cycle and then fire and step it back downward until it JUST cycles. The plugs vents off excess gas preventing damage. I've never done it.

Exactly right Bob, I use one in my M1
S/A in .308. That way whatever ammo comes to hand can be used. I think it's the safest way.

Actually , it's the slower burning powders that are the problem . They maintrain a higher gas port pressure at the port .

And this will avoid any possible damage and eliminate guess work. Nothing else is needed. You can then shoot factory anything without issue.
