Hornady A Max issue
You may have heard the A Max has had some issues with changing BC of the bullet in flight due to the friction of the air over the ballistic tip actually melting it. After exhaustive tests Hornady discovered this fact using Doppler radar they now have resolved the problem and offer the new ELD bullet but this will take a long time to reach our shores in Australia
.
So I thought share with you some of the dynamics involved to give you an idea of what a projectile goes through whilst in flight apart from the obvious.
From Townsend Whelens book Vol II Page 75;
The 30/06 bullets starts off at 2,700fps and encounters a gentle breeze of 1,841 MPH (on the nose my italics) which reduces its velocity to 2,460fps at 100yds. The 220 Swift at 4,140fps encounters a breeze of 2,283 MPH on the nose.........
So imagine the heat from the friction it is some thing I never really considered but the figures show that there are lots of dynamics affecting a bullets flight (Mann).
Just finished a book on John Nosler "Going Ballistic" I thoroughly recommend this book a rather great insight into his life and efforts to build a reliable expansion bullet.
Even if it did take 22 years of solid work on it alone for his dream to really flourish I enjoyed it very much a bit milder than Elmer Keiths "Hell I was There" another fantastic read.

I can say without any hesitation that at 100yds my Rem 700 can put 10 155g A-Max bullets in 1/2" hole. When this first surfaced I looked into ELD bullets but the price isn't worth it to me. For long range shooters sure, but for those out there with access to 100 or 200yd ranges there's not much benefit for the cost to be almost double.
The last time I looked nothing in the 150 to 168g was even listed. Just the heavies, wonder why??

My APRS loves 168gn A Max and is a 1/2 MOA rifle I have not changed the load at all since I brought it 3 years ago from them as thats what they gave to me in loading data. It was more for my 6.5/284 I like the 140gn A Max but have played with it and am not getting very far tried 5, 10,15, 20, 25, 30 thou jumps some one suggested I try a 10 thou jam but I dislike that idea as the 6.5/284 operates at high enough pressures. I have a new barrel to put on as this one is a bit tired at 1500 rounds been crowned twice and re-chambered once I may get better results with a new barrel.
I will want the ELD's for hunting I would say a 100 packet would last a fair while after load development Seirra have just had a big jump the 30 cals now are $90/100. Last year I brought a 1000 174SMK .311 so pretty lucky and cleaned out the gunshops remaining 400 174gn Highland 303 projies they are not made anymore apparently.
The supply problem I saw developing a few years ago so brought 6,000 155.5 Bergers and 4,000 140 VLD 6.5 Bergers and keep topping up every now and then so when a drought hits we have enough to see us through but I really want to try the new ELD as for the heavies I cannot say if they do not have them might be time to stock up on the 168gn A Max.
Couple of targets I shot at Collie (100m) last Dec '15 the 1 o'clock shot was me as the 1st round went through the diamond I got a tad excited the 3rd round came back into the group the group on the left target I shot first and corrected the windage on the 2nd.
We will wait and see WP what develops with Hornady.....!
