Anything is possible, it could have been swapped sights any time along the way too. I'd try some different ammo before doing anything, if you can.

Thanks, will do, Jim. I'll try handloading with both 200 and 150 weights before touching the FS.

They shoot high
You have a common problem. They all seem to print high at 100 yards. At around 300 yards they seem right on. You have the correct ammunition so go for it.

Lovely looking example. I am thinking of going for a WW1 era G98 next, do these long rifles have the same issue at 100yds?

The Gew98's are sighted for 400 meters. They will shoot very high at 100 meters. Not much you can do with them.
