I've owned this Model 1917 bayonet a while which has had it's belt mounting hacked off roughly with a hacksaw, by the look of it. What I am interested in is whether this was likely done by the BritishHome Guard during WW2 in order to fit British leather and webbing frogs or if it was done later by a civilian owner for some unknown reason, perhaps trying to make a British scabbard out of an American one. Sadly this has somewhat destroyed an early type M1917 scabbard but it is still interesting if done by the Home Guard. I can't decide one way or the other who may have done this and obviously we can't say for sure, but I was wondering if we could arrive at a consensus of opinion, please, on the most likely "converter" of this scabbard. I could make replacement parts to put it back to original spec but I wouldn't do this if it is felt that the home Guard probably removed the U.S. belt hanger/mounting.
Thanks for any help and information.Information
