$3,000 K98? -- What am I Missing Here?

A 1938 JP Sauer $ Sohn K98 with miss-matched bolt. Sold for $3,075... Is this for real or is it just crazy money? Am I missing something here?

Reading on another forum, I see the Mauser collectors state this was a restoration and refinished ? the butt plate is rare for the date too.

They also state it is not worth the money

Refinished and then allowed to blister up and rust again? I don't know about that...but it needs some TLC right now. I wouldn't pay that for it... Nice enough example though. Seems to all be there.

All joking aside, this is put together. Cupped butt plates weren't ordered for production until late 1939 and not on rifles until 1940. No picture of the butt plate Waa or sn. Can't see the stock cartouches. I'll eat my iPad if that's a matching stock.

I've been seeing some crazy prices on milsurps lately...

For whatever reason there's a crazy uptick in the prices being asked for miksurp rifles lately. If you've got a mint WWII-era K98K or Lee Enfield I get it, but people are out there asking $800 for bubba'd and butchered Mausers. For a short minute it looked like prices were coming down on Mausers and Lee Enfield Rifles as surplus 8mm and .303British dried up, but that didn't last long. Don't get me wrong, there's still decent 'deals' to be found if someone is just looking to move a rifle (I just scored a Longbranch Lee Enfield for under $400), but mostly it's $500 and up for even trashed examples and sportarized guns. Seriously, WTF!?

I unfortunately came late and only got in on the tail end of the golden age, but at least I got examples of most of the historical rifles I wanted. I'll just have to weep over missed opportunities for the GEW98 and K98K.

I know the feeling. I have recently purchased a couple of milsurp rifles and I weep over the prices people talk about five or ten years ago. I should have stocked up on these firearms instead of a 401k. I probably would be ahead on investment returns.

Not sure what your market is in Tx for Mausers but in So. FL, there just doesn't seem to be much demand for them. Seems like everyone is into "black guns" now. I've been trying to sell my Gew98 Amberg, circa 1916, (thinning the herd) for the last year for $495 and no takers....

It's pretty similar here... Black guns are in demand which means milsurp prices, while higher than they were just a few years ago, haven't skyrocketed the way much of the rest of the country seems to have. That said, there also aren't many for sale here.

That's actually the same thing I've been doing lately. - Purchasing M-48 Yugo Mausers, interesting Enfields and a small number of SKS's and Mosins. Corwin Arms here in Canada has been a great resource for M-48's ($400-550) that are mostly old unissued stock, or that have seen little field use. They also just brought in a good supply of Cdn issued Enfields ($700-1000) as well as some very nice K-31's ($650-950)
I figured that they will be more valuable than my limited amount of investments AND I get to play with them in the interim. Not to be a tinfoil hatter, but if the balloon ever goes up, they will be worth more than our investments will ever yield (a big fat ol' zero).
