He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose
There are no great men, only great challenges that ordinary men are forced by circumstances to meet.

36th ID. These guys were mauled heavily after the attack over the Gari River in February of 1944.
After the war, veterans wanted to charge Gen Clark with the responsibility for the heavy losses.
His response was that the fighting at the Gari was needed to protect Operation Shingle at Anzio.
Operation Shingle included a lot of British
forces as well and was under great pressure at the time as the Germans counter attacked to try clearing up the Anzio landings.
One of the British officers was a Second Lieutenant of the Royal Fusiliers, whose unit requested help when German
Tigers rolled in.
The help did not come forward and the company was killed, including Eric Waters, the Lieutenant.
Where am I going with this?
Eric was the father of Roger Waters, who with Pink Floyd wrote 'The Wall' album, which is the story of a young man who lost his father in the war (among other facets). He also wrote a song 'When the Tigers Broke Free'.
Roger Waters returned on Feb 18 2014 to unveil a memorial for his father, and the rest of Company Z.

He did a documentary with Nick Mason where, towards the end, he went to see his Dad's grave. IIRC, he also visited his paternal Grandfather's grave marked 1918. A tough life for a lad...

Gen Clark was personally brave but not a good commander. He landed at Anzio and instead of attacking inland immediately, stayed on the beach and let the Germans regroup and counterattack. Churchill said something like Instead of landing an Army we had stranded a whale. After breaking out instead of attacking and finishing off the German
army that was withdrawing in front of him and very vulnerable he took his Army to Rome. Once again the Germans regrouped and gave the allies Hell in Italy
. He should have been relieved.

I thought Clark had an alter ego preening himself for the press all the time.
I think sometimes in history your dammed if you do and dammed if you dont you know Monty was always cautious in Africa and waited till he had numerical superiority before launching attacks he was fetted with beating Rommel but what of "Market Garden" the one bridge to far mind you it did not help they were landed some good miles from the objective and the populace slowed them up all right on the doorstep of a heavily armed German
battalion. Was he sacked, not likely.
