K98 help
Just purchased this K98
it's all matching numbers from what I can tell BUT the stock has been sportorized. The stock is also matching numbers.
Can the stock be repaired or should I look for a replacement? Any information the Forum members can provide will be greatly appreciated.
I think I did OK, I paid $275 for the rifle.

You could end up with the equivalent of a duffle cut, if the stock isn't otherwise damaged or over sanded which it looks like it could be. You have some tough areas restoring the stock washers and clearing out the sling channel and it could be really tough if they used a superior glue. If it were not all matching, I'd just suggest getting a new stock. You are missing a few parts however that unless you get lucky won't have matching numbers. Hand guard, front band at minimum.

It looks like a duffle bag cut. It should be repairable. And, the repair could be hidden behind the rear band. Too bad you don't have the missing piece and bands, springs, etc. It also looks like someone tried to remove take down disc in the butt. Those show up on auctions and Ebay so, that's not an issue. I would hunt for a donor stock to get the correct laminate and repair that stock, especially if it is in fact the original one.

JB, Here's a link to a thread on a K98K stock rebuild that I did. It does take some time. I had more time than money when I did this but you may be better off finding an uncut stock. I think at 275 you did good and will still be in good shape if you spend 200 or so for a stock. https://www.milsurps.com/showthread.php?t=62849

It's absolutely fixable. All that's needed is a donor stock, or at least the frontend.

It's a fairly common manufacture and date, (Mauser Oberndorf 1944). I've got lots of original handguards available but don't have a stock. I'd probably repair it like a duffle cut as mentioned above.

Well I have the take down washers an still have a few duffel cuts left from a gunsmith buy out. Have no more laminate stacks left but could dig one up. H-band's an springs I due have in stock. Warpig is my go to guy for doing duffel cuts.
