I noticed this on eBay a "Western-civil-war-canteen". It looks remarkably similar to the type of canteen that St. John's Ambulance used many years ago for first aid duties in the UK icon

Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. Doesn't look like any US canteen I'm familiar with. Our old ones are all round right up to WWI when they went to the style that lasted through WWII.

to me.
