bolt markings of 03-a3 Smith Coorona
I just purchased a nice Smith Corona 03-a3 with serial number in 3,600,000 range and noted that there is no indication that the bolt is a SMC type. I am probably wrong,. but I thought to look for an X on the bolt, but this bolt has only two C's on the underside of the handle, and a 3 on the top of the handle, and then also an arrowhead type marking on the back of the bolt handle. Is anyone able to tell me what these markings and stamps mean? thanks, duggaboy

CC ( Commercial Controls) was a replacement bolt for rebuild purpose. It is not original to a Smith-Corona. I think you are correct in assuming a Smith-Corona bolt would be marked with an "X" on top of the bolt handle are maybe not marked at all. Some examples, I've read about, had a single digit stamped on the root of the bolt below the handle.
Other posters may have other information. I"m a newbie but learning.

The markings mean that your Smith-Corona rifle has a replacement Remington bolt in it.
Hope this helps.

Duggaboy - If you have " 4 new bolts in the grease " that are Smith Corona your sitting on a Mini Gold Mine!
If they aren't Smith Corona bolts then essentially your wasting your time and effort in having your bolt replaced; especially if your gonna pay a Gunsmith to do so.

yes, these are bolts wrapped in orginal packs, with identity on the military wrapping as smith corona bolts, and I opened one last night and it has the x mark on it. I will sell the others I guess. I need to get this rifle to a smith to take the old bolt apart and fit the new bolt I have with the parts it needs to function from my original old bolt, or get new old parts for the new smith bolt. who can do this bolt fiting? thanks duggaboy

DuggaBoy - Check your email for a PM - There shouldn't be any "Smithing" required to fit the bolt. Any local (to you) Gunsmith that has 30.06 Headspace guages (Go and No Go) can check the headspace in about two minutes. Since your "new" bolt is already disassembled it an extremely easy operation. If your close to Gettysburg, Pa. I'll be happy to do so for you and will also swap out the other bolt parts into your new bolt. No charge!

Great - No usual need to take the bolt sleeve apart so spare yourself that chore. Same applys to the cut-off. Everything else is 'Duck-Poop' simple.
I just noticed you are in Utah...not a afternoon drive from Gettysburg, PA. but stop by anytime!
