I always appreciate seeing the sporters that you post - keep them coming - they are all part of the "larger" history of 03's - some (like the ones you share with us) are works of great skill and art; some are not; but all of them represent someone's idea of how to take a rifle designed for the battlefield into another arena of use and enjoyment.

Michael,
Did Howe build the rifle himself pre-Griffith & Howe? Do you know who made the stock and when? Would you mind emailing me the serial number of that rifle? Sorry about all the questions, but I have a reason for asking.
If my vote counts, keep on a posting. Those rifles are works of art, and I can't imagine anyone not liking them. Just look at the hits on your posts.

I can only echo what everyone else says. In my opinion, they have just as much "right" to be on this forum as military rifles. Most of them are hardly "Bubba specials"! Keep 'em coming!

Michael,
Can you please elaborate on the side mount?....It looks like it was finished & blued along with the whole rifle....Is there any evidence of attachment screws?..I can't see any in the pics....Maybe silver-soldered, German
-style?....(I still am having no luck finding a Noske side mount, for which I have the base..)
Beautiful rifle...Keep those pics coming

The serial number of the rifle is circa 1923. Howe left G&H after four months and went to work for Hoffman Arms in Cleveland. Hoffman moved from Cleveland, Ohio to Ardmore, Oklahoma in 1925 and Howe stayed in Cleveland. This rifle was made by Howe after he left Hoffman when he was set up in Cleveland. Howe had a long career after G&H, Griffin had a long one before G&H.
I'm still trying to find his obit, anyone live near where he died?

G&H and other professionals mounted the G&H base with three screws and two taper pins, all left proud. They were then milled off flush and the base rust blued.
My experience with Noske is that their bases and mounts are not interchangeable. I have an early G&H with a Noske base that I have never found a mount for.
