Some pics of the CMP Inland racker

I apologize for the pictures. It is dark, dreary, and snowing outside, so I had to rely on flash and overhead lighting. I'll get better sunny day pics outside, if that ever happens here again! The lighting is so poor, I had to tweek the photos to get them more natural. The process is further hampered by "Frontier mis-Communications" and what they have for a pitiful excuse of what they call DSL in my rural area.

The metal is great and just needed some Balistol to clean it. Wiped it down with Break Free. The stock I cleaned just rubbing it with BLO/mineral spirits. but it was pretty clean and dry, so I soaked it with two coats of BLO, which it sucked up. I forgot to gwt a pic of the muzzel with an M2 ball in it. I will post that later.

With great metal and less than 1.5 ME, I am sure it is the wood with its carvings (not shown) and its "de-greaser spa finish" was what made it a racker. I figure when the whether gets warm, I will give the stock some more coats of BLO and a little 0000 steel wool. Until then, it will probably be wearing a minty SA pot belly with a new Saginaw butt plate.

It is definitely a mixmaster:

"Rock-o" Type I firing pin, "W" extractor, "IO" flat type II bolt with type I ejector, "SG" trigger housing, "H" in a shield Winchester type II rear sight, Inland "PI" Type III slide, Postwar replacement Type III band "AMCO" or something like that, post war flip safety, unmarked (except for M) type III magazine catch, "LQ" trigger, "S" hammer, "GB" (?) Type II sear, "W" Winchester type II recoil lug. I am sure there is more, but I think it qualifies for one of Brasidas' "Mutts!"

It is the sum of its parts, however. Great finish, looks like new springs, GREAT trigger pull, and looks like the rear sight is actually staked fairly centered on the bridge, so maybe it is one that won't have to have the rear sight staked left to hit on at 100 yards. I can't wait to shoot it.

Hopefully there will still be some rackers around once my checkbook recovers from that SP I bought.

Looks really nice, Bernie. Do you happen to happen to have any pics of the stock before you applied the BLO? I'd really like to see a before and after.

I'm restoring a type V stock that is really dry and haven't decided weather to stain it before the BLO or use Gunny's wax.

Also, please give us a range report after you shoot it!

Brasidas, no close ups, just this pic I took in the box. Doesn't really show how dry and porous it was. I think two more coats over time and some 0000 will help more.



Here is the M2 ball snug in the bore. Measured a tad under .180 inch from bore to case of bullet. Should be less than 1.5, I am guessing. According to CMP tech page, probably close to 70-75% bore life left.

I can't shoot it yet, so I guess I have to just dress her up. She really looks like she could have been there and done that!
