As far as I can tell, all vehicles are junk.

first thing, if you have a 1994 to current GM/Chev truck, immediately replace the transmission cooler lines, trust me...you'll thank me later.

google GM/Chev trucks electrical problems.

One guy at work has had 2 consecutive trucks (2 model years) replaced due to weird, unexplainable electrical issues. The dealership hooked up diagnostic sensors that never recorded any issues. they even installed a battery powered sensor so that electrical shutdown wouldn't wipe any data.

He won't buy a Ford though...and these are at least the 4th GM/Chev trucks that he's had (unexplainable & unfixable) electrical issues with over the last 15 years.

just before Christmas another guy here was telling me about his GM truck's ( a third model year) weird issues....exactly the same as the first guy. He said the dealership told him it was a Throttle positioning sensor issue.

He left the shop, and phoned me 2 days later to tell me about his new truck...a Ford. Apparently the TPS didn't solve his issues.

shutting down while driving at highway speeds, all the lights blinking uncontrollably, and transmission shifting is apparently not a good thing.

Pre-Fiat Dodge trucks had major metallurgy issues with the front & rear ends - Hopefully the Italians have fixed them - the Germans didn't... and don't get me started on their diesel truck transmissions.

and don't buy a previous generation of Ford Diesel... nor a 5.4L though the late ones fixed the spark plug burn in/blow out issues.

I'm curious- are there a lot of jurisdictions out there that DO NOT require periodic mechanical/ safety inspections? Unbelievably, here in Alberta (where the government meddles in virtually everything) there are no periodic vehicle inspections required. Here, once a vehicle is registered in the system it can be renewed ad-infinitum, sold, etc without ever being inspected. The vehicle next to you in traffic may not have been touched by a qualified mechanic in decades. I have slightly mixed feelings about it because I run a couple of Triumph bikes that could never, on any given day, actually pass a full inspection.

All vehicles 10 years old require a (passed) mechanical safety inspection before they can be re-registered to a new owner.

LE: Must be some confusion at the Registry Express. Transferred a 1972 Triumph last year without inspection. Is that a fairly new rule? In any case, in a country where you need a license to buy a high performance pellet gun you'd think annual vehicle inspections would be required (but wait- that would probably result in the sitting government being voted out).

Believe me, you ain't telling me nothing I don't know about the Ford 5.4L Triton engine. $3K last year to get it going again because of those stupid $20.00 spark plugs.

This is not quite correct, it an insurance company requirement, not the AB registry, and if you have an out of province insurance underwriter they may never request an inspection.

I buy and swap junkers/heaps of all sorts and have never been required to produce a mechanical inspection for registration. And since my insurance is an Ontario based provider they have never requested a mechanical.

Same with my motorcycles, it is an Alberta based provider and they simply ask the same boilerplate, VIN, usage, desired coverage.

Personally it's a breath of fresh air, the "safety inspection" dance has become a cottage industry back in Nova Scotia, nickle and dime charges to certify otherwise serviceable vehicles.

Where I cam from, the government liked to stay out of your business until you did something wrong. As such, you weren't required to keep your vehicle in any particular shape to drive. You did, however, need to keep your vehicle in working order if you were involved in an accident. If you were involved in an accident and your car wasn't in working order, you'd be cited. True.
