    7.62mm Mauser

I was out at the range this AM.. Lovely day! I took my 7.62mm Mauser out to shoot. Chileicon re-barrel with USGI Remington 2 groove barrel. Receiver top is marked: MODELO 1912. Faintly stamped under this date is NATO. The left side rail is marked: WAFFENFABRIK STEYR AUSTRIA, The serial number is C736x. Estimating 10,000 for the initial block, then add serial number block A 10,000 and 10,000 for block B and 10,000 for block C, this was at least a 40,000 rifle purchase in 1912. Hope I have that right. Nice shooter as well.

    Question

Not to hijack your thread, but I am just getting around to tearing down one I bought months ago. How can you tell if it is an 03 barrel? I can see no marks on the barrel other than a stamped #. Thanks for the help.

It is a 2 groove barrel that is identical to a Remington 2 groove. The exterior of the barrel has been contoured to a Mauser shape. So no markings I can see. Also, the barrel does not mount flush with the receiver. This is a common problem when using '03 barrels on Mausers. So, this is a "looks like a duck" matter.
