    Question 8mm FN-49 Chargers.

I've not had any luck finding chargers to work in my Egyptian SAFN or modifying existing ones to fit.

Does anyone else have this problem and/or a solution to my troubles?

From the reference material I have it appears the difference is mainly in the tabs along the sides of the chargers. I don't know exactly what configuration they're supposed to be.

Chargers that work in a K98icon or Cdn 7.62 Nato chargers don't work. The K98 ones are too wide and the Nato ones too skinny. I've ground down some K98 ones but still can't make them work properly.

I'd like to run it in the Milsurp/Tac Rifle shoot I organize each year, but can't do that effectively without chargers.

Doesnt look like I have anything of that nature around.

Are fn49 chargers no where to be found? seems odd, fairly popular rifle, even down south.

Apparently the charger guide dimensions on the various model SAFN's differ. Supposedly to allow the countries that adopted them to use their existing stocks of ammo and chargers. I'd guess that the chargers are not readily identifiable as being for SAFN's.

Given that Egypt didn't use 8mm in a bolt gun, the chargers were probably designed by FN for the SAFN. I've got FN 8mm ball on chargers, but it seems to be K98icon pattern chargers and not suitable for the SAFN.

Has there ever been Egyptian 8mm surplus in country? If it was on chargers it'd probably work.

Im failry certain I have seen Egyptian 8mm in the US for sale, however, I have yet to see any in Kanada.

Is the charger guide on the receiver cover, like on an svt, or is it buildt into the receiver like on a mauser? Sadly I dont own one of these rifles..

If you can find a copy of this:

It might answer your questions. Sadly, I don't have it in my library.

I have a better reference Claven. It's not much help in the charger area. I did manage to find one pic of a charger in my book. It appear the side "nibs" are limited to the middle of the charger, not all along the side of it. That gives me a little more to work with when I get out my Dremel next time.

    Sigismund,
The charger guide is part of the receiver cover, like the SVT.

Then, if it becomes truly impossible to find chargers, then maybe you can find a new receiver cover

Excellent, that's the way I was going to go. Thanks for the link Steve.

There's a thought. But I'd end up with rear sight graduations I could read. That wouldn't be any fun. I'm teaching myself arabic numerals with my SAFN.
