    Scope Mounts for SMLE III*

    Gentlemen

I have a very nice original Lithgowicon SMLE III* 1942/43 that I have purchased for shooting at the local range.

Unfortunately my eye sight is letting me down over 200 yards/meters.

Is there a source for accurate scope mounts for a No. III* , that do not involve modifing the rifle?

    Regards

    Paul

The recoil forces involved necessitate a firm fixing of the scope rings to the rifle to ensure that zero remains intact.

You will notice that the 'issue' mount and ring system are integrated on the No.4, which one would sumise is an advancement on the previous sytem for the No. 1 Mk III series, where mounting blocks are fixed to the receiver fore and aft and a quick detach system for the rings.

To date the 'no gunsmithing' style in aluminium or steel have yet to deliver a system superior to what had been developed at great expense over a number of years.

Another issue is they elevate the scope too high (even with low rings), needing the head to be lifted above a comfortable position. This is why the cheek piece was fitted to issue rifles and even with one fitted, one's cheek floats above it.

Look at a good rail-and-post system from Parker Hale who have had a long relationship with this family of exceptional rifles if you want your scope to last.
