Help figuring out carbine stock stamps

I just picked up an Ibm carbine this weekend and the stock has me confused. It has what looks like an L W in the slingwell and then the underwood rebuild .u., then the Ibm serial number stamped along the top. It also has a GHD over UEF in a box on the right side of the stock. I'm trying to find out what this stock started out as and what marks may be fake. The Ghd over Uef looks too crisp to me. Welcome to the carbine forum.

There is a search feature up in the task bar. If you type in keywords it will direct you to threads with that in them.

L W is Lumb Woodworking out of Poughkeepsie, NY. I couldn't see in your photo if there is a U or B after the L W. U for Underwood, B for I.B.M. That might give a hint as to where it started. Some imported carbines have the serial number stamped into the stock. Is there an import stamp on the barrel? Sometimes hidden under the wood when in the stock.

DaveHH, I had to laugh after reading the exchange. I don't even think Mr. Eastwood realized what he had said and meant no harm by it in any way. Pretty funny though. I find too many forums have no sense of humor and people are offended too easily. Have to say, you took it well, and with a grain of salt....well done sir.

In responce to getting roughed up after joining a forum: a few years ago when I joined a firearms forum [ don't remember which one ] I got a lot of flack because of my 'name', "shadycon". They insinuated that I was a excon and shady charactor, not to be trusted. I told them what it really meant and the attitude changed and I'm still there. GK

Thanks for the welcome Jim. Yes, there is a davidson's import mark under the barrel and I have heard that they imported some from Israel. I have read that they stamped their M1s like that. The serial numbers on the stock match the IBM that's in there now. The numbers look real clean though. Have ya'll ever heard of someone stamping the guns serial number on the stock to make it look like like they've been together awhile? I'm 99.9% sure the GHD is a fake, but I wanted some more opinions before I steam it out. I can't stand fake stamps, especially on a real usgi stock. I wished I had asked the seller more questions, he didn't really talk about the stock, just the internal parts. Thanks for the welcome again and I look forward to being a part of this board.

It is highly unlikely that someone would choose this stock to fake. The GHD/UEF is probably genuine. The Winchester stocks had nice deep well struck cartouches as well. They hold up well. Think about it: who would select a stock with the serial number blazed on the stock to fake? Enjoy it and forget about correcting it.

Thanks Dave, That's why I posted the picture. I want someone with more experience than me to tell if the ghd is fake. I don't plan to correct the rifle at all, it has a story to tell beyond it's wwII use. I was thinking of sanding off that ghd if it was fake though. Now I think I'll just leave it be until I get a definitive answer.

The boxed GHD/UEF is often placed where it doesn't get the abuse other stock marking seem to get. The stock also looks to have been cleaned which brings it out a bit more. The serial number so deeply stamped on the left side renders that stock to shooter status only for me. I wouldn't be concerned with the other markings.
