11-206 Garand Picture of the Day - Tarawa November 1943

Marines storming Tarawa get a brief rest while one of their party (right, foreground) relays messages and receives instructions by field telephone. The heavy black smoke (background) is from a burning fuel dump. (Nov43 #63984)

New life is brought to this wounded marine as blood plasma is administered on the beach at Tarawa. Credit another life to the blood plasma donated to the Red Cross.

Note in the second pic the discarded trigger mech. I've seen this before.

I just love that series of pics

I just love that series of pictures there are some great details in there....

top pic long M1905/42 bayonets issued with M1icon Garands..plain HBT dungaree top worn by the marine in the middle...."browns out" helmet covers and the DR-8 commo wire reel in shot.

middle picture..plain HBT dungaree tops worn by the corpsmen...BAR man has M1936 army pattern suspenders on and what looks like an M3 knife in his legging top.

bottom pic....marine in the centre foreground wearing the very rare square demolitions backpack..all that lovely new depot made USMC 782 gear and the unique "cam lock " USMC specific jerrycans

    Gotta love pictures

    Regards

    Lloyd

I had a paperback book about Tarawa that had a crop of the last picture as its cover. The crop showed only the fellow at top left.

Good eyes Jim.....i was wondering where his BAR was and there it is smack in the middleof the picture...notice unlike most marines this marine still has his leggings done regulation fashion too...not worn with the trousers rolled up over them.

    Regards

    Lloyd
