British(?) Weapon Cleaning Kit - M617(?)

I have a small kit, the box olive green, 4"x3"x1". It contains a piece
of wire screen and a brush in fittings attached to the inside of the lid.
The rest of the box is divided into 3 parts and contains a rope and
metal tube pull-through, a flannel cloth (white, with a narrow red
stripe at 2" intervals), and a tubular plastic oiler. There are no
markings of any kind, other than "M617" in silver paint on the inside
bottom. Anybody know anything about this?

Britishicon issued such kits for the No.5 .303 carbine as the rubber buttplate did not have a trap to hold the usual kit. Later with the introduction of the SLR---FNFAL autoloading .308 rifle the box was again issued but this time the little takedown tool was included in the box.

Yep......... and later it was changed to plastic. Based on the original old tobacco tin that the soldiers used before your tin became an official issue
