hi there i inherited this gun from my grandfather and was told it was a Enfield any info would be great. Markings are as follows:

these are above trigger guard

Symbol of a crown
E.R.
L.S.A. COLD
1901
L.E. I.*

stamped in wood near butt of stock

LONDON and 2 stars enclosed in a circle and then a crown and another symbol enclosed in a circle in the circle before

L* under the stamped circled

stamped on brass on butt stock

Looks Like a early Lee Enfield, MLE (Magazine Lee Enfield) I may be wrong. A real good site is The Lee-Enfield Rifle the site has everything about all lee enfields and since you have the rifle you can compare to pictures on the site.

fergie10, What you have is an excellant example of the first design Lee Enfield. Yours differs from the original in that there is no provision for a cleaning rod to be mounted in the fore end. The cleaning rod was dropped in 1899 by the MoD and rifles manufactured without provision for one were designated Mk.I*.
