    Question for barreled receveiver

Hi, got a barreled receiver from CMPicon a few years back,Spr. March 45 production. (yes, just getting around to it)Looks to be original park, light gray, chamber in the white, TE 2.5. I took it to a gunsmith to check the headspace with a couple of bolts I have, and neither will correctly headspace. He wants to move barrel and rechamber. Is this common with such a low TE?

    thanks,
    Bob Shunkwiler

What condition are your bolts in? Have you tried a -2 bolt there the longest of the bolts? And yes getting a barreled receiver from CMPicon that doesn't head space right is a little unusual.

    Question for Barreled Receiver

Headspace should be checked with a Field Test Bolt. That's what they are for. Then you know if the barrel / receiver is in spec. You can then try a number of bolts to find the best fit. I doubt that -2 bolts are any longer than -12, or why would they have bothered, and they are ALL interchangeable, when new.

Is your gunsmith familiar with M1 Garands? Many good gunsmiths are not. It is not feasible to "set back" and re-chamber an M1 barrel. If he doesn't understand why, then you should look for another M1 gunsmith. As Tom said, I would check to see if your gun will "pass" on a Field Test gauge. If it doesn't and you can't find a bolt, as U.S.iconG.I suggests, your only option is to rebarrel.

The late 65 series bolt may also get you back in spec. Its possible that the lugs of you bolt are worn, and a bolt thats seen less service may be all it takes.

A very early -2 bolt might help. Try to find a gunsmith who is familiar with the Garandicon. This guy isn't and don't allow him to do any work on the rifle. Where are you located?

You also can try a -19 bolt. I've received a BR about a month ago with a high TE. Tried a -19 bolt and she headspaced fine.

Mac McCoy (a true Garandicon genius) lives in Santee. This would be a 1 hour drive south for you. Take your toys to Mac. Good luck.
