    1903-.22LR By Niedner

Niedner started making these circa 1914 for himself and friends at the Boston Rifle & Revolver club. They originally had a Niedner barrel but some have had the barrel changed over the years. The stock on this one is one I put on a few years ago, the target shooter who had this really messed up the original one. I’ve been trying to locate more of these so let me know if you run across one. I missed a nice sporter made on one of these rifle years ago so maybe it will turn up again. “The rifles are single-shot with a “V” trough and matching bolt, all you have to do is drop a cartridge into the trough and close the bolt, slick loading.

This is my shooter, I’ve run a pile of ammo through this rifle. Target was shot 5-19-09 at 50 yards, with good (expensive) ammo it still delivers the goods.

Beautiful rifles, (and pictures!) as always, Michael! I'd surely like to spend a day at your place looking over your collection!!

Well get in line, I get a several visitors in the summer and not in the winter, wounder why? No fooling, if you or others find yourself in Anchorage let me know I'm just a few minuets from airport and all gun-nuts are welcome.

After Niedner moved to Dowagiac, MI he put a new barrel on his rifle and had Tom Shelhamer restock it.

I would love to have one of those. With the relative low cost of low number, and sporterized 03's, it is my understanding that one could make a .22 with 1922 M1icon and M2 parts. Am I correct on this ? I believe it could be done with less expense than buying a collector 1922.
It would be great if we could get Krieger to make a limited run of 03 barrels in .22 rimfire from the Criterion side.
I would really like to build one.

I don't think it can be done using the M1922 or the M1922 M1icon bolt.

They require the "overhang" part of the receiver (which is located where the clip-slot is on a standard '03-'03A3) to unlock the latch of the 2-piece bolt.

The M2 bolt WILL work, however. --Jim

Yes, it can be done. I have a couple of rifles that I made using M2 barrels and M2 bolts with 30-06 receivers. I have just completed two more rifles using 30-06 barrels relined to .22 LR. with 30-06 receivers and M2 bolts. NOT an easy task, takes a lot of lathe time. An insert and chamber end extension has to be made. The chamber insert extension has to be carefully made. Extractor & ejector reliefs are a pain to cut. But the results have been very good so far. I finish reamed them with a Match chamber reamer then carefully adjusted the headspace with the bolt adjustments. Using Wolf Match Target, (the cheaper stuff) I shot 50 rounds at 50 yards resulting in one hole measuring 1/2" wide by 3/4" high. I have a Unertl 10X scope mounted on that rifle. The second rifle is a Remington 1903 A3, I shot it yesterday its group was quite a bit larger (about 1 & 1/2") using the issue sights but still acceptable. Real nice projects and am real happy with them. I plan to make several more as they are just "Fun" rifles to shoot.
