    1903-03/4

are the real, orginal sniper 03-4's marked with 04 after the 03, maybe the 03 could be crossed out? I see all the remington sniper rifles but none marked as o4's,??

No, but they were marked like this with the model designaion and serial number offset so that it wouldn't be covered by the scope base.
There are a few out there with the 3 X'd out and a 4 added. I guess some rebuild facility took it upon themselves to correct the deficiency.

some 1903A4 sniper rifles may have the 3 crossed out and a 4 stamped over it..but they would need the features of the rifle pictured above by Johnny.

I own one with the 3 crossed out and replaced with a 4. Not home so can't post photos, but it is a Benecia arsenal rebuild.

FWIW, in one case, a stolen M1903A4 was recovered by police in a raid but the police refused to return it to its rightful owner because he had reported the theft of an "M1903A4" and the rifle was marked "A3". The owner had to hire a lawyer and get a letter from some expert before getting his property back. The police insisted the serial number was not enough to establish the rifle's identity.

Have information on half a dozen or so A4's where the trailing "3" was "x"ed out and a "4" inserted. Where the information was available its seems to have been a practice at Benecia and Augusta but other depots may have done itt too.

Rifles effected are in all s/n ranges and several were released thru CMPicon sales or auctions.

    Regards,

    Jim

"...marked as o4's..." 'A4', but we'll let that one go.
A real 1903A4 is about the serial number and the manufacturer. There are no non-Remington '03A4's. The S/N will be off-set so it can be read with the scope mounted too.
    Spelling and Grammar count!

    ahhhhhh.
as matter a fact, i know of 2 SC A3,s modified for sniper use, listed as 1903A4 snipers rifles, still in inevtory...
at least they were 3 years ago, they were set to be destroyed, along with many othet neet old sniper rifles..
i dont know, what branch did the modifications, or the exact history.
i close friend was the person in charge of the weapons storage, and had them saved for training, his a gun guy as well, but no longer with that unit.
a tour of the big sand box, changed a few things for him.
