It would appear that the M1is canted to the side. The picture might be of the Slapton Sands Training exercise just prior to Normandy rather than Normandy itself.

I'm sorry Mark, I'm not seeing anything unusual. These would be follow up troops coming ashore and there would be all manner of personell and all units clustered together. Thus carbines, '03 and garands. What is it you're pointing out?
I think Mark is looking at it the same way I am. It almost appears to be a gas trap.
