This July 4 afternoon, we were getting ready to leave for some festivities when I noticed some heavy, thick rust on some ammo cans. I knew it wasn't supposed to be there & hadn't been there a couple of weeks before. I was even more alarmed when I found the rust was wet. I began pulling cans out to see how many were affected (7) and then tried to find the source. I had a gallon size bleach jug that sprung a a leak that was sitting on a wooden shelf above the ammo. Perhaps 24 ounces had leaked out. The black line in the photo shows the level. When I set it on the concrete driveway, it formed a 4' long slick within 20 minutes so it was a pretty good leak; it could not have been leaking more than a day or two. When I moved the jug, I was amazed to see it had dissolved the shelf. I poured vinegar on the cans and followed up with a steel wire brush & soap & water. Only one cae was breached and this was an old one that already was rusty. I'll finish the cans by repainting them with Rustolem. No more bleach near the cans!Information
