No 1 Mk V (haunted by bubba)

The finished (rust blueing) you can see bubba,s work still on the (not so blued part of the grub screw) action this has not taken as fast as the rest because the outside of the thread has been case hardened if you look at the cross section, the middle has taken well, had to stop the blueing at this point as the match is as good as i will get, will go back to the screw later, below is the before and after. Am now waiting for the flood of offers for furniture required, and rearsight, please dont be shy.

After searching the house high and low for a mag cut off, i found this ? bought on ebay a few years ago part of a job lot, the two cases are 7.62mm converted to, one has cross hairs, the other has a mirror at 45 deg built in, whole set i would guess for something to do with setting up a barrel sights? has anyone any idea, once i know what it is may list in sale part.

Yep, it's the bracket into which you mount the L1A1 rifle to bore sight in the SUIT sight and the old IIW night sight. If I'm not mistaken, the whole thing fitted onto a .30 Browning tripod as was used in conjunction with a wooden bench and........... What a load of faffing around!

The number stamped in is the NATO part number. Not a lot of people knew that!

An IIW mounted onto the sheet metal cover! Sounds just about ,well, near on worthless for field use. Bad enough keeping one zeroed on the old M14icon setup.

To be fair, although the L1A1 IIW sight cover looked a bit flimsy, the special cover for the L1A1 was quite substantial. A squared-off section was brazed to the cover and the rail fixed to the squared-off bit. It's true saving grace was the fact that the zeroing adjustments for the sight to rifle were internal and not external as on the PVS and the old SUIT sight.

Old hat technology now of course but highly collectable..........., both the IIW sights and the covers!
