    Question Manufacturers of Spare Parts??

Did anyone other that Eddystone, Remington, and Winchester make spare parts for the M1917? A couple of parts on mine have what looks like a strange marking, and I can't really make out what it is, but there appears to be a number underneath it (422 in the case of the bolt stop spring rest).

AlReiter, Is the strange marking that you refer to an eagle's head, with very small numbers under the neck of the eagle? If so, those are inspectors' marks, from the various manufacturers. I am going from memory here, but the 300 series was Remington, and 500 series was I believe Winchester, perhaps 400 series was Eddystone?

There was at least one (USMC - a shoe company, not the Marine Corps), and perhaps several other commercial companies that made spare bolts during World War II. I am not aware of any other commercial companies making spare parts for the M1917. HTH, KarlKW

KarlKW, Yes, the marking could be an eagle's head (my wife thought it was a bird of some kind) and there are small numbers under it, in this case 422. I saw another post somewhere that referred to the 300, 400, and 500 series markings, but it wasn't clear what they were referring to. Now I know!! Thanks for the info.

Page 100 of Mr. Ferris' book "United Statesicon Rifle Model of 1917" indicates that inspector marks 1-200 were assigned to Eddystone; 201-399 to Remington; and 400-600 to Winchester. The number "422" is listed as having been found on at least six different Eddystone parts. He also notes that the eagle is usually facing left except that on many Winchester parts it faces right. Bolo Badge, Thanks for the info. The eagle on this part is facing left and has the number 422 on it. Is this part (bolt stop spring rest) one of the partw where 422 was found on Eddystone parts? I've ordered Mr. Ferris' book, but it hasn't shipped yet so I'm floundering a bit.
