    3/4 Boxed SA cartouche

An acquaintance showed me a Remington M1903A3 that had the original finish and correct Remington parts, but had a Remington 03A3 stock with no "RA" cartouche or ordnance escutcheon on the left side, no "P" behind the mag assembly, and no assembly inspection marks ahead of the mag assembly.

The only cartouche was on the left of the butt. It consisted of "SA" in 3/4 box (left, right, bottom -- but no top).

I've heard that Springfield Armory did some rebuilds. (Is this the case?)

But how would this be the only cartouche on the stock?

The inspection stamp dates from post-WWII and is from Springfield Armory.

I've seen "SA" stamps like you describe with no bottom. But, I don't recall seeing one with no top. Yours is very unusual.

Rick, the post War SA open box stamps are open on the bottom.

My guess is that when the stock was stamped, the top part of the stamp failed (for whatever reason) to leave an impression in the wood. If you look at a lot of WW2 M1icon Garand stocks, you will find many with the top part of the box missing.
