Oil in an oiler

I'm curious....

How many of you actually put some oil in the carbine oiler? Does the oiler leak? I suppose maybe a repro might leak. I would be ****ed to see my sling all oily and my stock to look like it ****ed it self

Follow up question, if you do put oil in an oiler, what kind of oil do you put in there? I was thinking about squeezing a bottle of Breakfree CLP into an oiler.

I have several with 1943 (1953) vintage lube in them. Stinks like a mad polecat. Leather gaskets do leake but the neoprene 's are OK. Otherwise, Leave the CLP in your pocket.

I put oil in them, shake it up then pour it out to protect the inside from corrosion. I have never kept oil in an oiler installed in a carbine.

As Landtrain said, some will have old smelly oil in them. I used to open them out of curiosity but stopped. (Smelled enough of it to satisfy cuiosity and didn't want to create a leak where there wasn't one).

Personally, I see no need at all carrying oil inside one for maintenance use in modern cicilian use for many reasons. As you said the worse case scenario is you create a leak by taking it apart too often and it ruins a $100 sling.

Why would you mess with removing an oiler from your stock for a drop oil, when your carbine should be oiled properly the night before, and you aren't many miles in the field for weeks or months under fire and can't get to the oil can in your personal effects you left in camp.

Just walk back to your truck and get an aerosol can and oil away if you need oil in the "field." Or carry a small bottle of your favorite brand in your pocket if you walk too far from the truck and feel paranoid you might need a drop of oil.

Agree, I don't leave oil in any of mine either. I maintain them at home and check them before I take them out to shoot.
