LOTS OF LUCK!! They only made 5000 nad they are almost impossible to authenticate, only 150 being so. Those that have been have serials from about 112864 up to the 133919. Must are concentarted at 119xxx,118xxx and 120xxx. The others are single rifles here and there. Many, many cut down 98 rifles are being sold as carbines so education and caution are needed or you will get stung!

There is a 1899 carbine on Auction Arms. Looks pretty fair except for the 1896 rifle sight.

Ten years ago, a man and his wife walked into the Missouri Valley Antique Weapons Collectors show in Kansas City with one. I was coming out of the restroom and caught them in the lobby before they had a chance to enter the show. Asking what they had, the man handed it to me to look at and told me how his wife had found it in her fathers closet after he died. I asked them if they wanted to sell it. They said "yes". and I asked how much. The man said $175.00 . I put on my best considerable thought face as if I had to think about it and while still holding onto the carbine, finaly said. OK. I sold it to a buddy for 500 bucks and he sold it later to someone else. Those were the days. Wish I'd have known enough to keep it. They're out there still. Yes, it checked out as original as the final owner knew before he bought it.It went for under $1,100.00 though.
