New to me CMP HRA SG Garand

Just receive my "new to me"

CMP HRA SG Garand
S/N 564xxxx

Receiver side marked " 6528291 " And a " W. " above that

Oprod marked " 6535382 HRA "

Rear sight windage marked " HRA-W "
Rear sight elevatation marked " HRA "

Barrel marked " HRA 6535448 4-55 RS50 "

Bolt marked " 6528287-SA " " A15 " heat lot.

Trigger marked " D28290-18-SA "

Front handguard is real tight, no slop - no movement what so ever.
As I understand....not good I assume.
Needs some room?

Sights feel tight and move well.

Stock feels nice, but greasy!
Lots of grease in every corner.
Lots of character and handling marks.
I like the grain.

Barrel appears dirty, but very defined rifling and looks like it will clean up well. Don't see any pitting in it.

The charge handle on the oprod has some minor wear from use, some shiny metal starting to show, feels polished, no rust no pits anywhere.

All the finish matches.

Seems to be an all correct rifle , but for the bolt and trigger assy.

The trigger assy shows light wear, but some on the trigger and hammer.
Otherwise very minty.
The trigger assy threw me. (again a newbee learning ) I thought the milled trigger guards from SA were original early 45 and before SA WWII production.

SA bolt, looking up the numbers and heat lot, the bolt is the right time frame compared to the barrel and appx born on date for the s/n of my HRA.
But I've been told, nope, HRA parts only should have come in there.

So , is this maybe a CMP change out?

Doesn't seem like the Greeks would put in a 44/45 trigger assy, and putting in a mid 50's bolt, on a rifle that looks slightly worn metal wise.
Why would someone change out the bolt and trigger assy... except for CMP to build a minty correct HRA?


I'm very happy with it. I'll get her cleaned up and an official physical by Orion 7, then down the range.

Man the CMP really sent you a nice SG! Judging from your excellent pictures, there's nothing about that rifle not to like. It should not be so difficult for you to change out the few parts needed to make it all correct. All you need now is a can of HXP and some quality time at the range! Sincerely. BruceV.

So many nice HRA SG were being shown on the CMP forum, I was afraid to open the box on mine and find the exception.

A couple of weeks before the last of my 10 can allotment came in...
So now just need the range time!

S.A. started using Stamped trigger guards in Mid 1944 .... though milled guards were also used into late 1944. All HRA's should have stamped guards.

jayclay, I'm doing a trade with a buddy who wanted the SA bolt and had an original finish HRA correct # bolt for my HRA, and as of now, it seems he's keeping the SA bolt for a project. Sorry.

BruceV, you were right on....
The gun got a blue ribbon of health by Orion 7.
Except for the bolt and trigger assy, needed nothing else to be correct.

Muzzle 1.5 and TE 2.0, all passes and all VG marks, and no work needed.

Now to get some range time and put a few rounds through it.

Not really...Your trigger housing is from 1945. Your '43 receiver would have a -12 housing. Your Hammer Spring Plunger is from LATE '43
Your stock does NOT appear to be an HRA, (No HRA porch and serifed "P") however, maybe Tony saw something that we could not see in the pics.

Again, thanks for talking about it, gives me a reason to ask more questions and look into it more.

I stopped by Orion 7 to pick up my carbine today.

Talked to Tony about the stock, and also refereed to the battle rifle website.

Tony had a lot more info supporting it being an HRA stock.

The battle rifle website states that later HRA rifle stocks may have serified Ps.
And porches range in size.

Tony said, said the butt plate was an HRA plate with no doubt - he showed me the little reasons why it's not an SA butt plate, but is an HRA butt plate.
To him, it looks original to the stock. He agrees with the later HRA stocks may have serifed Ps and has seen it.
All parts of the stock look HRA, markings are right, and yes I have a smaller porch, and he's seen many like that as well.

I learned a lot.
I enjoy getting to chat with Tony, if it's shooting the bull, or mulling over rifles he got in.
