Pictures of rejected No.4 Mk1(T) rifles

Shown are two 1945 vintage (Dr. Payne's theory that most would be 1945 date may well be correct) No.4 Mk1 rifles with the TR cancelled. The rifles are good examples of condition--good and not so good. I am glad I don't collect by condition.

The possible cause of rejection for the good rifle is that the front sight base is solid and does not accept the front sight pinch screw.

Neither rifle has the "T" marking on the left receiver flat. The markings to the left of the good rifle's cancellation markings relate to the importer.

Won't disagree as to Dr. Payne's theory either, but given that the second contract was for 5000 rifles, of which 1560 were completed, seems to indicate that probably no more than 3440 "TR" marked rifles should be floating around of the '45 (and '46?) vintage w/o a "T" marked. Eh, plus what few of the previous contract's 674 rejects that happened to be 1945 dated as well...

Anyway, dang few, esp. discounting those rifles w/ pads but not outfitted w/ scopes.

I've never seen one in person, and I'll look at the worst bubba jobs out there, just in hopes of finding something interesting!

BTW Fixed the earlier post w/ more concrete numbers.

P.S. Are either of the barrels original to the rifle, and do they have any of the supposed "sniper" marks discussed recently?

Do these rifles have the RSAF(E) examiner's marks? I have a 1945 action in the X3---- range from which a lot of T's seem to have come. It has the TR struck out with the mark shown in your first photo. It also has the S on the cutoff block and BOTH examiner's marks. The second mark of course is not supposed to be there until the the conversion is finished. There are no holes, no machined flat for the front pad, nothing except the marks. The action has original finish BTW and came out of the remainder stock of an 'old time' dealer. It's legit for sure.

My guess would be these rifles were rejected for something like 'over/under-breached' barrels, causing the misalignment of the foresights.

Mine is marked up exactly as per yours, including the D6E examiners mark. But then, if you look at a 41 BSA conversion you may well see exactly the same mark on the knoxform of all places!
