Field Repairs/Modifications

We are all pretty much familiar with upgrades our carbines received at various arsenals post WWII, but my question is what changes or repairs have you seen that may have been done by field armorers or GIs in war time conditions?

Field repairs were done at every level. from the most basic swapping of parts to installation of the M2 kit. It's usually impossible to tell whether certain things were done at the depot or lower levels, but the M2 kit rquired the stock to be inletted for the selector switch and trip lever, so sometimes you'll find these cuts to be less than perfect. Then, of course, you have the work by 'bubba', which you usually can't tell from USGI either, unless it involves refinishing of some kind.

As we have seen and told by my Father.
You see many carbines that had the front sights' guards cut off...for better/quicker sight line up in low light conditions.

One of the more obvious is the field replacement of the flip to adjustable sight. Have seen several otherwise original type 1 carbines with the adjustable sight added. Here's a flip sight that most likely had a problem with the leaf pin backing out and was staked/restaked. This carbine would have been an excellent candidate for the rebuild program if it stayed in service.
