Where to find a good Receiver Wrench?
Without having to pay a small fortune for.

I personally have not seen the new ones for sale. I needed to change one barrel, so I made one. I copied the design from a book. I only had soft steel to work with and had a spreading problem. To fix problem I bridged the gap with another piece of steel. That stopped the speading and I was able to replace barrel.THEY ARE TIGHT! This may work with these new barrel wrenchs. Have a welder bridge the gap. I'll post pic later.

Originals will cost hundreds, if you can find one. But there are some decent new models out there. In the $85 range. What is considered a fortune? What is the cost of marring up a receiver or barrel?

Value for cost really depends on how much you are going to use it. If it's only once, maybe it's not worth the money. But over the years it may be many more times and the cost per use then goes down.

How many spray guns do you have that only get occasional use?

Charlie, JimFM4s' lead is a good one. I have a set from folcmote (Nick) and it works just fine. I usually add a little tape to insure against marring. Regards- Jim.

I successfully made and used an adapter for a standard bolt action wrench from a hickory hammer handle. Worked for a one time use, but probably would not work again and again.

Actually the problem I had that was more spendy than I wanted was to find a chamber reamer. I could find rental of standard ones, but did not want to repeatedly remove and reinstall barrel. Finally, loosened up and bought a pull through one.

Rented it one time so far to a local gunsmith. Still have it and will rent or sell.

Question; How wide is their [folcmote] reciever wrench? From his pic it sure looks good!

I have the L&S catalog on my desktop,
If only their parts were real !!
It would be the best 'Wish Book' there is for carbine collectors.
I see they have just the wrench for $39 plus ship.

I've only removed 2 barrels. Both times I borrowed a wrench from fellow member BobG here.
One of those receivers was so loose I was able to unscrew it by hand. It was some commercial receiver but had a very nice dated WRA barrel on it.

The 2nd one I knew would be stubborn. I had used a penetrating oil on it days in advance. Made up a barrel block to fit in the big vice by drilling a long 12" hole thru the center of a hard wood rail, then ripped it in two.
When using the wrench I taped the receiver where there would be metal to metal contact.

Money is getting a little tight around here. With my Fathers care running me over $3k a month plus 2 kids in college.

You can't go wrong with Nick. Also, with his, you get both the wrench and barrel block.

I've been using one of NIck's for years. I've never had any problem with it that a cheater bar didn't solve!
