IBM Hack saw cuts and P proof questions ??

Hopefully those of you better informed about IBM's can help me out.
I see both dated and NO date IBM barrels with and without the hack saw cut behind the rear sight blade.

Does anyone know why this is?

Also what would be the proper size and style P proof stamp marked on a IBM barrel used by IBM?

Would it be the Serif P about 3/32nds" tall?

I don't own all the CC back newsletters.
Does anyone know where there maybe a listing of P proof markings used by the makers?
    Showing size and style?

    Appreciate any help,
    Charlie

    Hi Charlie,
I went through some back issues and found a couple of things.
"CC 12-2" addresses the "milled" cut behind the sight.
IBM always used the "I" cut key slot and the saw cut was added around SN#3,900,00. Winchester also made this change. No reason was given in this issue.
The barrel proof is mentioned in "CC 191-5".
    3/32" serif "P" is correct.

    Regards,
    Denny

Might want to do some further reading. NL# 110 would be a good start.

Two IBM proof marks, first one is on a dated IBM barrel, second on is on an undated IBM barrel. Neither have serifs.

Excuse me if I'm late to reply.
It's hard to set at the PC right now.
I was leading in 2 horses last night when a trespassing hunters shot rang out just at dark. It spooked a already high strung Thoroughbred, as he turned I took a HELL of a kick to the right side of my chest.
I get 3 broken ribs out of the deal.........hunter gets away.Wife spends nearly 3 hrs catching Big Will and his Quarter horse buddy.

    Denny,
Marcus was kind enough to share a album with me.
I've seen the cut on IBM barrels in the 3,653,xxx range.

    Thx,
    Charlie

    Brian,
Can't Thank you enough right now.
    Your time is very appreciated.
I'm only capable of sitting here for a little while at a time.

    Regards,
    Charlie

This first picture is a NO date IBM barrel, NO hack cut. It's a Blue Sky. It came on the IBM receiver I plan to use # 3,849,505.
You can see it's clearly a Serif P. I don't know who may have used it.
Doesn't matter I plan to pass it along for a shooter barrel.

This 2nd picture is the best of the other 2 IBM barrels I have. The P is the same height the best I can measure, but doesn't appear to have serifs.
This is also a no date, and has the Hack cut. It came on a SG receiver.
The 3rd barrel is just like this one but looks refinished.

    Here,
    A picture of both.
To me the Serif P looks to have a larger loop on the circular part of the P.

Charlie, you lead an interesting life.

May I recommend that you just sit for a day or so? Your fellow Gurus will still be here ready to help when you feel up to sitting at the desk again....

    Just a thought,
    Phil
