    M14 Op Rod question

It was pointed out to me that some M14icon Op Rods have a hole drilled in the forward end cap and some older ones don't. Can any one inform about what is the purpose of this hole? and, is it desirable? Thanks in advance.

I have been told it was to let water out if the rifle was submerged, dont know if true but there is no plus or minus to the hole.
