    Another Savage No.4 MK1 question..

    Want to replace front sight on this rifle, but cannot get the front sight off. Had to drill out the pin, since it wouldn't budge. Now, the sight will not budge! Is there a secret to this? Do I need to take a torch to it?

    What do you want to replace? The actual FORE SIGHT blade? or the whole block from the barrel, including the blade or just the foresight protector?

    You've totaly lost us with the notion of drilling a pin out!

    The foresight protecter is already off. The sight blade is also off. I want to remove the rest of the front sight, the "body" of it. There was a pin holding it, and that was drilled out, but the rest of the sight will not budge.

    There is a notch on the barrel, between the sight lugs, and the pin sits in this notch. That is the pin that has been drilled out.

    That pin is a taper pin and my bet is that you have , if you'll excuse the phrase, bubbad it by drilling it out instead of just punching it out. There's probably a bit of the pin remaining OR, at a guess, we soft soldered the block in place too, that it's still retained by the solder.

    Just heat it and tap it with a rawhide mallet. It'll slide forward and off

    Thanks Peter! No offense taken, since I have to admit, I bubba'd it up for sure! The pin refused to drive out, so I got mad, and drilled it. I'll have to get a refill for my propane torch. Thanks again for the help, I really appreciate it.

    The problem now will probably be that you've drilled out the taper, and a new taper pin won't hold in place.
    Mine are not the best, but they are not too bad. I can think of lots of Enfields I'd rather have but instead of constantly striving for more, sometimes it's good to be satisfied with what one has...
