Found this the other day while i WAS reading up on that turn of last century society portrait painter, John Singer Sragent. The man could paint like the old masters - he worked with brush and paint on raw canvas, no underpainting, no drawing, nothing.

He painted this in 1918 or 1919 for the War Remembrance museum. It is now in the Imperial War Museum in London. It is a huge painting, 18 feet long, I think. I'm guessing he painted it from a photo, but he may have actually been there.
