My first Mauser patteren rifle.

This came from an estate sale and was marked as a VZ. It's a M48 from 51 or 52. It appears unfired now that I have all the cosmoline off of it. Kind of a nice rifle, unfortunately the hand guard is cracked, if any one has a spare I'm in the market for one. Are these 8mm worth shooting or should I just pass this along?

nice rifle. The Vz aren`t bad shooters with the right ammo they are really good. Shotgroups with 35mm to 48 are possible. The best ammo to buy was the 185grs. Geco Target.

works well for fixing handguard cracks.....mix it up, slightly spread the crack and apply epoxy, then rubber band or clamp the handguard. You need to degrease the handguard first. This method has worked well for me over the years.....chris3

Think it´s the same rifle as my Gebirgsjäger 33/40. If so, the hanguards ALWAYS crack. I´ve got one spare but can´t use it as the wood looks too new.
