    Springfield no. 216618

Ive come across an early springfield no. 216618. that puts it in 1906.
This rifle does not have barrel markings( so is it possibly a rod bayonet variety? Any way to check this? Its rear sight appears to be a 1901 krag rear sight with the lever in the front. Were these ever placed on the springfields? The front sight does not have the two holes in the side and the forend metal is for a knife bayonet. Stock is the ole two lug type. any help would be appreciated.

No barrel markings? Sounds like a Sedgley. They took poor barrels and sold them off to factories for guard use. Sedgley had piles of low number rifles, as well.

Look on the lightening grooves of the fixed rear sight base - is there a "circled S" there? Could also be a Bannerman rifle. Do any of the parts appear to be M1917?

I have a Buffington type sight just as you described, and it came off an 03 barrel. I thought it was a one-off, but probably Bannerman. The workmanship is surprisingly good.
