Help ID a strange round

A buddy just called me. He picked up some .45 ammo. He says it looks like a shotshell but the end is "open". The base says "REM USMC 1906".

Does anyone know what this stuff is?

Shotshell for a Colt SAA in all likelihood. Not a whole lot to go on there... Guessing that's REM-UMC (no "S"), but?

It was the headstamp that I was most interested in USMC 1906 No this fellow is an older fellow so it is possible it says REM UMC.
