I almost jumped on this girl but bubba got the end of the barrel. Still some one could still make her presentable.

It went for $300, but it looks like someone has a lot of work to do. At least the 1941 Long Branch I found did not have any bubba'ing to the barrel, and had not been through FTR, but you try finding a 1941 walnut Long Branch forend - I think they cost more than what I paid for the rifle! I hope the new owner has better luck

Then again, how much might I expect to pay in the US for an unbudbba'd Savage No.4 Mk.1 (not Mk.1*), and what kind of rear sight should be fitted?

The low number of this rifle almost certainly added a bit to its price. I have seen unmangled Savage Mk. Is go for less than $500 on Gunbroker. Mine (a '42 3C block) cost me $125 at a show. It's been to India and shows it (Suncorite, replacement bolt and woodwork, Ishapore screw), unfortunately.

Unless the rear sight has been changed, it should have a Savage-marked Mk. I backsight; mine does. Early S Mk. Is will also have 6-groove barrels that Savage pulled from commercial production.

Take spare junk barrel, bore out to suitable dia. for three inches or so, lop off 'tube' with necessary blocks, machine barrel on rifle to match, solder on, discreet taper pin or two in foresight block and you're good to go.

Bolt is a post-war replacement but still...

My 7C was lucky Bubba did not molest the barrel, it has dirt cheap $100 as I recall.


Cleaned up OK, still looking for a backsight...if anyone runs across one LMK.
