Will black oxide work with JB weld?

I have a gun that I fixed pitting on it with JB weld and sanding it down. I planned on using a spray on gun finish, but now am thinking of doing black oxide since I have everything at work to do it right.

Will black oxide coat over the JB weld and stick to it, or am I better off doing a spray on finish? Thanks.

Ok,sorry! The heated solution will NOT be compatible w/ JB Weld...

Paint or powder coat.

Black oxide comes in many types, some companies offer a {cold} type...but they are copper based, and usually have a nasty smell...{cold blue}
however, true Black oxide is basicly sodium hydroxide, sodium nitrate..with water heated to 300 degrees,
it is a coating that reacts to exposed metal surface, likely the JB weld will be gone, and if not, the black oxide will not react with it.
im a beliver in JB weld...however...im for doing it right..and then you wont have to do it twice.

i have a cap on a tooth in the very front of my mouth, had a car fall on my head off jack stands amd busted out most of my teeth,,anyway..
one of the caps on the front of my mouth broke from a wrench slip, chipped it in half.
Dentist glued it back on, with a white epoxy that smells just like JB weld,
hmmm. and charged me 95.00 for 10 mins of work..gawd.
so. a month later, im big game hunting, take a bite of a apple, and that little piece comes right off...
so later that night, i remember i have some JB Weld quick at camp in my camper, soooo....i figure what the hell, i glue that tooth back together..
figure it will last at least long enough to get me through Elk season...
15 years later,, its still holding, and never came loose, all you can see is a very light line...
thats something to be said for good ol JB Weld...

Chuck, I admire the improvization guys like you have. Once my Dad lost a filling and he used aluminum foil and packed it in the hole. A year later he went to the dentist for another problem and the dentist couldn't believe he did such a good job. My brother put 15 stitches in his own leg with an Army medical kit after he cut it on a construction job.

dont get me started on Stitches, done lots of em, iv super glued a few nasty cuts as well..
and some of you will remember a few years ago, i cut my own finger nail off with a dremil tool, and a diamond bit, to remove a 3 inch long splinter from under the nail bed..i even provided pictures...
long of the short of that one, i couldnt get all the wood out, and ended up a week later in the ER,,the Doc was so blown away with my work,,it was a {no charge} freebie.. as long as i sent her pictures..
many years ago, i had a GTO fall on my head, while i was installing a clutch, {story of the teeth above,,when it came down, it hit my cheek bone so hard it popped my right eye out of the socket, a floor jack saved my life.
ran in the house, wet my hands, and pushed my eye back in the socket, and drove myself to the ER..cops showed up wanting to know who kicked my ars... i said a Goat...a big silver Goat lol...kinda puzzled the officer, he asked, i told him..not until my wife showed up, did they leave, and wish me well.
belive me,, i have many many more... im too cheap to take a trip to the ER.
after working in one while taking my EMT course, most is just clean it, stitch it,,put a band aid, and send em home...$$$

$1000 crown on canine. It came loose a month after I had it put on. Dentist re-glued it on. A month or so later it came off while on a two week bowhunting trip, and I JB'd it back on! Figured I'd go back to my dentist and raise hell when I got back in town.

It's still holding tight and I never went back to dentist. I figured why mess up a good thing. Dentist already had two chances and didn't get it right

Chuck, maybe we should contact JB weld and see if they want to put our testimomies on the package with the others!

thats funny, now i dont feel so redneck, id bet the JB weld already makes that stuff,,just adds some white dye...
i also have a rear sight base on one of my 1903,s thats been held on with JB Weld for over 20 years...gotta love it.
heres a funny one... my ex wifes dentures broke, they wanted 3 grand to fix em..i said,,,ill fix em,they will never break again..
used acra glass gel, let em sit 24 hours, and that was 15 years ago, she still has the same set..and the same repair...gotta love redneck tooth repair lol..

From my experience JB weld is great stuff however it will not take a rebluing effort.

If you use a paint spray over the top the paint will become tacky after a few rounds. unless its a high temperature resistant paint - Some people have used BBQ blackener on rifles in other forums whilst others have gone to specailst paint companies to see what they can mix match.

Looks like a stupid accident thread so I'll chime in with a redneck ambulance story.

December 6th, two years ago I'm up on a roof trying to brush snow off of it so I can shingle the next day. Made a mis-step, found myself on the ground very quickly. Stood up and heard and felt grinding in my lower back area and could not move or put weight on my left leg. I was 45 minutes from home and my home hospital. An ambulance would have taken me to the nearest hospital which was 25 minutes from home plus I didn't want to go to that hospital so I get the homeowner and his neighbor to carry me to my truck which is a stick shift with the assurance that if I could not shift gears I would let them take me to the hospital. I managed and drove to my home hospital and called 911 from the emergency room parking lot. They thought I was joking but did get a nurse and orderly to come out and get me after a few minutes talking. I had a broken pelvis in four places. The ER doc is one of my clients so I wasn't much of a surprise to him. He just looked at me and kind of laughed. Made me stay over night but I was out the next day. I don't like hospitals much. Spent most of the next 6 weeks in bed.

Back to the main topic, as a person involved with construction, I see a lot of displays on the counters of my suppliers. Some of them appear to involve liquid "metals" which can be used as adhesives. I've been wondering if any of them can be used to fill holes in rifles and if they would hold bluing.

nothing but real C steel will take black oxide..no epoxy..no bondo ect will take a true black oxide coating. cold or hot.
its a reaction with exposed metal surface, no matter what it says on the tube, its not metal, its an epoxy.
some, cast and stainless steel cane be blackened...and i use the word some lossely.
if you do some net searching for the word..black oxide..youll find this yourself.
many will take paint, and dyes, and some are hard and strong enough to be drilled and tapped.. 3M panel bond is one of the best 2 part epoxies around, and is used to glue your cars and trucks together..yes..even your superduty Fords..they arent welded,,,they are glued.
a few years ago, i used it to install new floors on a old Chevy truck i restored..
i doubted it lasting...10 years later, they look like the day i installed them.
