    Winchester 75 sights

    Last year I bought this Winchester 75 at an estate sale.

    It is in pretty nice condition, but has two issues-

    1. No sights

    2 Someone has filled in the front sight dovetail and painted over it. I think it has been filled in with lead, but am not certain of what material it is.

    I've got several different rear sights that might work-- a Redfield straight 75, a Redfield "dog leg" tall 75, and a Lyman 58E. I've also got a Redfield Olympic that is currently out of work. I've read that all of these sights might work, but I suspect that each would require a different front sight.

    Anyone able to guide me as to which rear sight to use and what it should be paired up with? Anyone have an opinion as to which is the best rear sight (Redfield 75 or Lyman 58E).

    Anyone ever heard of filling in the front sight dove tail? I suspect that this rifle was set up with a scope before and that this was done for aesthetic purposes.

    My old Lyman catalog (circa 1965) shows the 58E used with the Lyman 77R front sight mounted on the "D" base. The "D" screw on base is specified as having a height of 0.415". The height of the 77R sight is specified as 0.451" There is a 77H that has a height of 0.773" amd will probaly be too high for your rifle.
    Hope that helps

    My Mod 75 target came with the 84A rear and 99A front. It is a 2nd year production

    This is from the CMPicon forum:

    Winchester provided quite a few options for the 75 when it came to sights. A couple of sources indicate that the standard sights for a 1940 vintage 75 would be a Winchester #84A rear and a #99A front. Options would be;
    Rear- Lyman #57E, #58, #57E(in combo with the #93 blade front) and the Vaver#3875. Later models would also include the Redfield 75HW.
    Front- Lyman #77, Vaver #1175, Winchester #93,#77, #99 & #105A, & Redfield #63.
    Most of these sights can be found if you look hard. Prices will be high but original sights only add to the value of the rifle.
    Both Williams and Lyman offer target receiver sights & front sights. It's a toss up between them. I have used both. The Lyman 90 MJT has heavier construction and more certain clicks to the adjustments while the Williams Target has a finer degree of adjustment but the clicks are a bit touchy and uncertain. Both are alloy and both do the job very well. I like the old sights better but these are worth what you pay for them. Anything better would be 3 -5 times the price.
