Blue Sky Marked Herlo barrel

saw one today on a Winchester Blue Sky Import, never saw one until today it was interesting to see.

Any thoughts to where it may have come in from? Korea?
After they were rejected..... Didn't they try pawning these off to Korea?

the barrel was short chambered, the fellow who brought the rifle in to have it checked out before buying it.

a wild guess would be that the barrels were given to the Koreans to repair their carbines with otherwise, your guess is as good as mine. we can fix the chamber but the seller was asking more $$$ than it was worth, with the cost of the repair and all not a wise buy.

M1 Carbine Barrels Produced by Herlo Corp


Myth: People working inside the Weapons Command had a brain storm and produced barrels with no twist. The effect would be tumbling bullets for use in Vietnam.

The Facts: Herlo barrels had several quality control problems:

Lack of twist.

Inconsistent twist rates, meaning either increased or decreased twist rates as the barrel length progressed.

Improper dimension inside the gas cylinder, resulting in seized pistons.

Improper dimensions on the front sight base area, resulting in loose sight keys and rattling sights.


The entire Herlo barrel contract was rejected by the government. No barrels were accepted due to the numerous quality control problems. The rejected barrels were purchased by a California dealer, circa 1975/76, who then sold them to the country of South Korea, as "US GI" barrels. The bulk of the barrels came back into the US when Armscorp, in Baltimore, and Red Cloud, in Virginia, imported them in 1996-97. I have never seen a carbine imported from Korea with a Herlo barrel installed, so most likely the Korean government experienced the same problems.

Probably no way to answer. But glad you saved the guy his money.

Interesting stuff.
The California dealer purchased the rejected barrels " circa 1975/1976 " .
Brings up the question: When did the dealer sell the unservicable barrels to the Republic of Korea ? It might be fun to explore the historical context of that sale and why representives of the ROK military were in the market for M1 Carbine barrels during the late 1970's .
I suspect that they had a serious and very understandable sense of urgency about the situation.

Wow, light bulb moment... makes you wonder if those Korea carbines do eventually make it back into the US, I wonder how many will have the Herlo barrels. Definitely gonna strip 'em for parts!

I have a Korean Armory/ Bluesky imported carbine made by Inland. The barrel is typical WWII issue it shoots quite well. I bought this sometime around 1995 could have been as late as summer of 1996. The metal has obviously been refinished the stock is solid but cosmetically total crap. I saw a lot of these Korean M1 Carbines around that time as they were very popular in the local gun show circuit fetching around $250.00 more for a rarer maker or super nice condition.

not sure if they were shooting it or not the headspace was tight. Mikey i was having login problems and been into the Nazi marked K98's as of lately.

but at least one made it back in with a Herlo barrel.

I had a Blue Sky Stamped Herlo barrel. I bought a bunch of take-off import barrels and it was with them. I may still have it. I'll have to look in the o'l bucket of barrels. I am also the guy that had the Rock-Ola stamped Herlo barrel reported in CC NL. I forget the NL number. I posted the pictures of the Rock-Ola/Herlo barrel on the old, old CSP and they have been around ever since.
