    The Millionth Savage

I recently posted in the Holy Grail thread that my top choice would be the millionth No4 (0C00000) made by Savage that was given to Brig General Drewry on May 18, 1944. After I posted it, I started asking myself questions I was unable to answer. I tried to do a search, but was unable to find any discussions on this topic and was hoping someone on this site would be able to answer a few questions:

    1. Is the millionth rifle's s/n 0C00000 or 0C00001?
    2. Does anyone know where this rifle is?
    3. Has anyone ever seen this rifle?

I seem to recall seeing it in the Springfield Armory NHS reserve collection in 1987.

Thanks to Mk VII's information, I was able to do a little more digging and found the following. The millionth Savage rifle was transferred to Springfield Armory NHS on June 09, 1945 were it is being stored in the collection room. It is tagged as SPAR 5801. I sent an e-mail for additional information and rec'd a response back today from Richard T. Colton, Park Ranger at Springfield Armory (US Department of Interior - National Park Service). According to Mr. Colton, the rifle is in the collection room and is not accessible to him. He was only able to give me the info that I already pulled off of the website. The bolt assembly and safety catch are missing otherwise in excellent condition. Here are the markings on the rifle per the website:

    Socket strap: 1000000
Receiver: Ordnance bomb, S NO. 4 MKI*
    Stock: S in circle. S.

I guess the only thing I was able to accomplish is finding out where the rifle is located. I will contact Mr. Colton to see if he can tell me who has access to the collection room.

Most likely someone 'borrowed' them for another rifle.
