newbi here with a barrel question?

I have a Win. model US 1917, made in May of 1918 according to the S/N. It has been sportized profeshingly. (The finish on it is A-1) By who I don`t know, but it is not a home made converion. My question is? On the left side of the chamber right above the stock were barrel connects to the receiver it is stamped 30-06, no other markings on the barrel. Is this a mil. barrel or a custom barrel of some sort? Thanks in advance.

hard to say without a picture of the barrel, likely the inspectors markings were removed, when the blue was done, and they marked the cal, at the same time.

    Well....

military bbls were marked behind the front sight with the makers ID , a flaming bomb , and the date of manufactor in a month-year format. They were not marked 30-06. That being said , however , your bbl could be cut down ( removing the info marks ) and then had the 30-06 added. It could also be a custom bbl. Pictures would help.

Here are the pics of my rifle. I forgot in my earlier post to say that it has a 24in barrel & on the under side of the barrel were it meets the receiver, there is a witness mark 1/2in long that is stamped across the joint.

looks like a standard GI barrel that was shortened, and heavy polished..
the witness mark is actually on the bottom side of the barrel and mates with one on the receiver.
