Hi M1 Carbine fans,

I'm new to the forum.

I have an Underwood SN 23439397. I got it when I was a kid; I'm thinking late sixties but can't remember exactly. You would get one for $50(?) when you joined NRA.

We messed the stock by "sporterizing" it, sanding all the hallmarks and finishing with polyurethane. I am interesting in replacing the stock for a more authentic look.

Still fun to shoot, it just doesn't look as "cool" as some.

Hope to learn a lot from you guys.

As long as you do not need a collector grade stcock, that should work just fine. Plus it still has a pretty fair cartouche. I would call Damon tomorrow and just make sure there are no pins. It may be my eyes, but it kind of looks like it has one.

welcome. The first carbine I shot was a DCM carbine in the 60s. Does your carbine have late features (adjustable sight and bayonet lug)? If so, it is a post war rebuild, so any GI stock would work. If it is early features (flip sight, no bayonet lug) it would be worth the trouble to find the correct stock. Charlie Painter, USGI Collector, Bruce, PBI, and many more can tell you what would be "correct" (say expensive....). If it is a mix master (re-build) and you want a traditional shooter, Type V "potbelly" stocks are best for shooting.

Mine has adjustable sight and bayonet lug. Don't know about the rebuiltness.

I don't need a correct stock just one that has not been altered the way mine has. My uncle was the gun expert and we followed his suggestion, as I recall. My brother got and 03-A3 and I got the M1 Carbine. We modified the stock on the carbine to have a half a.. pistol grip, by rasping away most of the wood in the grip area, sanded it smooth and painted it with polyurethane. The stock has nice straight grain. We even put dowels in the hand guard rivet holes. Even so it has worked ok now for 45 years, but it hasn’t really been shot much. I’ll try to post some pictures.

That one looks like it would clean up pretty well. Assuming you still have the hand guard that came on yours.
