    1916 DWM Gewehr 98

Recently got this Gewehr 98 that came with what looks like the rear end of a Kar98a stock (it has a hole for the lower band screw) and the front end of a Gew98 stock. The stock is in two pieces with "Verdun" carved in the butt and the inside looks like it was inlet with a pocket knife.

The metal was neglected and had patches of gold inletting paste, but it matches except for the bolt and follower. Bolt self-matches except the firing pin, and the follower matches the bolt.

I don't have a Gewehr 98 stock but I had a Brazilianicon M1908 stock and walnut K98kicon handguard that I'm using for now. If anyone has a spare Gew98 stock and handguard I am interested in buying them. At least the rifle is now usable.

The bore cleaned up nicely and the headspace is OK.

It really cleaned up nicely. Start looking at the really big gun shows. Try the K98icon guys. You will run into the wood. Good luck.

    Milsurp,

That rifle looks like it saw time in the trenches. I would try to repair the original stock - the Verdun carving is priceless. I've seen WWI rifles with carvings in the stock before .. like a Lebel with a short-timer calendar carved in the butt. Or maybe he was counting kills. WHo knows.

The stock is from a different type of rifle (Kar98a) and unfortunately it has really been messed-with. Comparison to a complete Kar98a stock:

    With Kar98a action installed

Someone sanded the outside of the stock, removing the step for the lower band

resulting in poor fit at the handguard and triggerguard

They also did a very crude inletting job so a large-ring Mauser action would fit

I think it is beyond repair. Really a shame if the stock was originally whole except for the Verdun carving.
