Hi. This is my first post. I have been a member since January 2010, and I have thoroughly enjoyed the M1carbine forum section. The collective knowledge of the members is quite remarkable, and I have learned quite a bit about the M1 carbine. Thank you for your contributions.
I acquired a "bring back" (or so the previous owner said) 1st contract M1A1carbine. It was carried by a 101st paratrooper when he jumped in on D Day. It is all Inland and appears to be correct. It has a SN of 902XXX and a 10/43 Inland barrel. The receiver was manufactured by S'G' for Inland. The stock is correct with the appropriate stamps on the base of the pistol grip. The butt plate is cast with the requisite numbering. The leather on the cheek piece had been replaced at some point, and it was done with hollow rivets. I had it professionally replced with the appropriate leather and rivets. The handguard is the only part of the weapon that is not Inland. It is a 2 rivet handguard is a type I Underwood with the script "Pedersen" engraving. It matches well with stock and the wear pattern where the buttplate strikes the stock/handguard.
The only thing wrong with the stock are 2 faint and small hairline cracks on the operating rod side of the stock. The first crack extends from recoil plate forward about 2.5 inches. the second crack begins at about where the bolt ends and extends about 5 inches. The cracks are both about 5/8" deep and do not appear to be full thickness. They are at the exact level where the the thin walnut meets the thicker walnut on the stock.
My question to the foum members is whether I should have these professionally repaired with glue or just leave them alone? I will not fire the weapon with this stock....I'll just move it to a Type V stock for range duty. That being said, I appreciate your expert opinions!! Thank You.Information
